AI sourcing has solved discovery. What it has not solved is the part of the job that separates a specialist recruiter from a search engine.
Gartner's 2025 talent tech landscape lists more than a hundred vendors claiming AI in sourcing, matching or outreach (gartner.com/reviews/market/recruiting-software). The category is loud. The category is also flat.
Watch a specialist recruiter for a week. The value is not in surfacing another 500 profiles. The value is in the sentence the recruiter reads in a founder's essay on Sunday morning, the note they take on a call at 4pm on Tuesday, and the fact that on Thursday, when a role lands, they remember exactly which candidate that sentence points at.
None of that lives in a sourcing tool.
What AI sourcing actually does
Three jobs, done well by different vendors:
- Discover more candidates. hireEZ (hireez.com), SeekOut (seekout.com), Findem (findem.ai). Cross-web and diverse-talent search that reaches past LinkedIn.
- Enrich the ones you have. Loxo, Manatal, Gem. Fills in what the record was missing.
- Automate the send. Sequences, cadences, follow-up trees. Every tool in the space now does this.
None of these is wrong. But if the specialist recruiter's edge is knowing which candidate matters this week and why, more discovery and more automation compound the wrong number.
The gap sourcing tools do not fill
Ask a working desk what they wish existed and the answer is remarkably consistent: a place where the specific line a candidate wrote, the article that reframed my sector this month, the note I took after a briefing, all live in one memory that surfaces at the right moment.
That is not a sourcing tool. It is not a CRM either. It is an intelligence layer, and it belongs to the recruiter, not to the employer or the agency.
Why the category will not fix itself
Sourcing vendors are optimised on ROI signals TA leadership buys on: profile volume, response rate, time to shortlist. Memory that compounds for the individual recruiter has no line in the standard TA analytics deck, so no incumbent has a reason to build it. It has to come from outside the sourcing category to exist at all.
Where HOLI sits
Above the stack. HOLI reads what you learn about your niche, remembers the specific context your sourcing tool never captured, and drafts the next move in your voice with source attribution on every line.
